Family Planning as a Continuum

1/28/2016

FEMM, the organization I am studying with, calls the timeline of hormonal health "The Continuum". This term covers all the endocrine seasons from pre-puberty all the way up post-menopause. It includes transitional times like  peri-menopause and breastfeeding. But what I like the most about the continuum is that it makes no assumptions about where a woman is and allows for the fluidity of hormonal health.

I like to think of Family Planning intentions as a continuum, too. For some women, it might be a switch that is simply flipped on or off. But for many, it's a little more complicated than that. Fertility Awareness Based Methods of family planning allow for nuance. Personally, I love that. If you're just dipping your toes in the Fertility Awareness world, you've probably seen the abbreviations (among many others), TTA and TTC. Respectively Trying to Avoid Pregnancy and Trying to Conceive. But a new acronym is making its way into FAM bedrooms - it's called "TTW" - or trying to whatever.

Couples armed with knowledge about their possibility of conceiving on a given day can take calculated risks.
